Maximise your interview

By preparing and following a few tips on interview technique, you can stand out from the crowd.

Firstly, prepare! How do you know if you want a career with a company if you know nothing about what they do and offer? Looking on the company website will provide you with a wealth of information, including subjects such as when and how the company was founded, projects that the company have undertaken and on occassion recent press releases.

Someone who can speak knowledgeably about a company changes and events will build a positive rapport and make you memorable to the interviewer.

Top tips for a good, and potentially successful, interview
  • Do your homework - research the company and prepare questions
  • Travel - arrange your journey in good time
  • Timing - arrive a few minutes early
  • Dress as though you are ready and enthusiastic to go to work
  • Smile - don't underestimate a smile. It will give you confidence and expresses enthusiasm
  • Sell yourself - the product you are selling is you
  • Be polite to the staff you meet
  • At the conclusion thank the interviewer

Consider what the interviewer wants to know - think of yourself as a product with features and benefits you want to sell.

Some companies utilise competency based interviews. These focus on specific skills required to fulfil the role, for example team work or customer service skills. To be successful you need to cite a specific example of a work based scenario.

Questions
There will be appropriate times in the interview to ask questions. Asking questions about the company department, desired qualities and challenges shows your interest and background work. This enables you to gain more information about the company, its culture and development ensuring it is the right role for you.

Here are some questions you may like to consider:
  • What is the evaluation process for this position e.g monthly review
  • Are there performance targets to achieve?
  • What would be the first challenge?
  • Does this role encompass long term objectives
  • How does this role contribute to the efficiency and success of the company?
Make hiring you the easiest decision an employer can make!
